Past Young Eagle Days on Oshawa

June 10, 2006

Members of Canadian Owners and Pilots Association ran a successful Young Eagles Day at the Oshawa Airport on Saturday June 10th, as part of COPA’s ongoing program to introduce young people to aviation. On Saturday, June 10th,  311 children were given rides by 13 local pilots. The program is entirely volunteer; the pilots donate the fuel, and aircraft. A fuel discount was supplied by Canadian Flight Academy, and lunch for the volunteers was sponsored by Cox Aviation Supplies and the Refueling Café at the Airport.

Flying can be a great teacher and motivator for young people, but without programs like this, it is very difficult for young people to become involved.

Since the international program was launched by the Experimental Aircraft Association, in 1992, more than 1.2 million young people between the ages of 8 and 17 have taken a free airplane flight. Oshawa area pilots have donated over 5600 rides to children since the program started.

During each flight, pilots demonstrate how airplanes fly and the proper preparations for a safe flight. After a short introductory airplane ride, each Young Eagle receives a certificate signed by the pilot commemorating the event. The certificate is also co-signed by current Young Eagles Chairman Harrison Ford, an active EAA member who has personally flown more than 240 Young Eagles.

In addition to the certificate, each Young Eagle is entered into the World's Largest Logbook housed with the EAA Air Adventure Museum in Oshkosh, Wis. The logbook records the Young Eagle, participating pilot, date of the flight and aircraft used. You  can look up the Young Eagle and pilot records at  the Young Eagles website

Oshawa Young Eagles Program

Canadian Owners and Pilots Association
COPA Flight 70

Saturday, June 11, 2005 dawned hot as our southern Ontario pre summer heat wave continued. Oshawa’s COPA Flight 70 members’ began early morning preparations for our annual Young Eagle’s day at CYOO.  This year, 196 new Young Eagles experienced their first flights in our members aircraft, bringing our 10 year total to over 5500 Young Eagles.

In order for this to happen, much work had to be completed behind the scenes. After 10 years of flights led by Doug Raine, Karl Soihtu picked up the torch this year.

The weeks leading up to June 11 saw over 220 children pre register for the experience of flight. Word of the event was spread through member work-places, local school boards and scout/cub packs, through our web-site, and a local newspaper provided pre-event interviews with some of our members.

Before the children arrived we completed display setup and a pre-flight briefings with the pilots, line volunteers and tower staff.
The Registration desk was ably staffed by Francine LeVasseur, Joyce Parker, Joyce Poirier, Dorothy Raine, and Barb Soihtu.

Ground safety briefing with the Young Eagles was handled by Gord Mahaffy.

Young Eagles escort duty was handled by Ron Bull, Pete Hartley, Dave Jukes, Maurice Laganiere, John Mayell, Louis Poirier, Karl Soihtu, and Paul Hartshorn.

Pilot volunteers this year were Doug Anderson, Jim Beattie, Max Hudson, Wayne Jeffery, Tony Jones, Mike Kadykalo, Jim Kamstra, Cheryl Marek, Brian Murphy, and Doug Raine.

Marshalling staff were Jim Dilworth, John LeVasseur, Ron Parker, and David Reiss.

Trina Singleton volunteered both her computer and herself for certificate printing using EAA’s handy Young Eagles certificate program.
Through our inaugural ‘parent survey’ we discovered that more than half of our participants were visiting the 70+ year old airport for the first time.
A mother commented that her daughter had a great time being co-pilot, learned a fair bit about aviation and hopes the program continues. That first flight experience, provided at no charge to those young people, serves as a catalyst, helping build interest for kids in math, science, and technology through their fascination with flight. Whether or not these Young Eagles become pilots, they learn a valuable lesson - hard work, determination and focus can help them reach their goals. "If you dream it, you can do it." That is what Young Eagles volunteers teach these aspiring achievers.

COPA 70 wishes to extend thanks to the hard working Oshawa control tower staff  Richard Davenport, Mike Ettie, Glen Hyde, Catherine Redmond; 151 Chadburn Sqn. Alumni for their Air Cadet information, Jim Cox of Cox Aviation Supplies for food subsidy, the Long Sault Flyers for their radio control aircraft  display, and Kathleen Denyer of Oshawa terminal’s ‘Refueling Station’ café.

Important Message from Young Eagles
Have you flown some kids, over the past years, and not sent in a young Eagles form??
It's not too late to send in the form, even if the flight was some time ago,
just print one out, and mail it in
